What's NewTuesday, January 31, 2006Oscar and Bragging Rights
Okay folks, we here at C5 know we work with the most talented directors, producers, editors out there, and it's nice when those talented souls get recognition... so when BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and CAPOTE show up through this Award Season as much as they have, you just know we are glowing down on 22nd Street. And check out those Oscar Nominations. I know who I'd vote for. At any rate, congratulations to all involved, and as Bennett Miller, the director of CAPOTE continues to tell me, we all share in getting there... and there would be no "best" if all involved weren't giving their all. Paul Hsu pointed out to me one of the Documentary Selections is also one done on our old stage on 27th Street... STREETFIGHT. Also, we've been involved with some very notable movies and documentaries at Sundance... Paul Hsu, Nick Renbeck and Eugene Gearty touched one or more of these projects; GOD GREW TIRED OF US, A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS, FLANNEL PAJAMAS, and NIGHT LISTENER. And that Neil Young documentary that Paul Urmson was involved with is opening soon, and advance reviews say TONS about the sound. So there ya go... some boasting here on the blog...

The Gotham Awards were the other night, and I've got to congratulate Nick, Sean, Alexa, Marissa, Kam, George, and Marko for working with me to help CAPOTE get the best Indy film award... and the reason I can be this self congratulatory is that Bennett Miller, the director of CAPOTE who also won a Gotham as breakthrough director would be the first to point out the whole collabrative venture of the thing. The process that leads to awards couldn't happen without the involvment of many. In our case, it was a small, tight crew, pulling off top quality work. Making a 6 Million dollar movie stack up with the hundred million ones. Subtle as hell... sorry, but the hardest thing to sell is silence. Congrats!

Well, it’s been way too long to try and update this blog, as so much has happened here at C5 not to mention New York City. C5 has experienced change and growth, while becoming meaner and leaner, remaining independent and able to service films with various budget and creative needs.
So I’ll just touch on the highlights: Note the address change. Our new landlord is Sound Track, giving us access to things we didn’t have in our old digs, as well as being good friends when we needed them. Big news is Lis and Nick, with bells ringing at the end of the month. Movie news: C5 was very well represented this festival season. CAPOTE, EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED, NORTH COUNTRY, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, THE NOTORIOUS BETTI PAGE, NO DIRECTION HOME: BOB DYLAN… proving yet again we work with the best New York has to offer, as well as the capability of taking a mix anywhere we are asked to, be it Vancouver or LA. Have drive – will travel. We’ve also worked on THE NIGHT LISTENER, WANDERLUST and THE ICE HARVEST, which is coming out this fall, and presently have in the shop on 22nd Street - TRUTH JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY (title to change at some point), and Spike Lee’s next film INSIDE MAN. Also, our Foley House is doing work on FAILURE TO LAUNCH and THE SENTINEL soon. Enjoy the season changing… it looks to be a busy fall. posted by C5 Sound at 8:43 AM 0 comments Monday, March 21, 2005March Madness!
C5 continues to become the new "Crazy Eddie" of sound budgets, it seems. Enough said.
Well, Nick Renbeck is supervising and mixing RUNAWAY, Paul Urmson is beginning work in EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED, Ben Chea has something needing to get to Canne that has called him just weeks before they need to be stepping onto a plane for Canne, it seems, Phil is starting a documentary on Bob Dylan, and Paul Hsu is working on FLANNEL PAJAMAS. We've got this independent feature circling and waiting to land about Truman Capote that I've done a fast Avid Slam Down Temp and prep for, and BEWITCHED is in my room for some sound design on the magic sounds. We'll see how all these jobs work out during this month and next! Awards came and went and AVIATOR did wonderful at the MPSE Banquet, as well as ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. Congrats Phil, Eugene and the rest that worked so hard on those projects last year. More later! Ron posted by C5 Sound at 9:45 AM 2 comments Friday, February 18, 2005February
The weather can't decide if it's winter still or spring. And jobs can't decide where they want to be done. It's that crazy New York City pre-Canne schedule nightmare combined with not a lot of work. This WHAT'S NEW Blog has finally become active and I'm figuring out how to update it and expand on it. So what's new? Nothing real solid since January. BAFTA came and went, robing AVIATOR in my book by a musical. Oscar around the corner. Phil and Eugene are mixing BROKEBACK presently, Lew started work on a prequel to CARLITO'S WAY at at Sound One, other gigs have continued or been postponed, and newer ones just look like potentials. Hopefully an update in a week or so will change that! I've only heard encouragement from people I trust that work is picking up, New York is back on the radar and more projects will be finishing here. And THAT'S really "what's new"!

Welcome to C5’s first ever “What’s New” blog. In this space we’ll try to keep folks up to date (within reason and effort on my part) with what’s happening in the lives of C5-ers and work in New York City.
First, a big congrats to the AVIATOR team led by Phil and Eugene! BAFTA, MPSE nominees, Oscar and CAS nominee in abstention (complain to me at ron@c5inc.com about that one), and overall great sounding film getting noticed! Next up for most of that gang is Ang Lee’s film, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. Let’s see, recently Lew did THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, Ben is working on BETTY PAGE. Al has been cranking on a couple of independent films (listen to the FX in MARIA FULL OF GRACE and you’ll see how far that boy has come picking the right sounds), Paul Hsu finished up ICE HARVEST end of last year, Paul Urmson has a new pogo stick knee (and should be home by now from the hospital), Sean is in LA mixing ROBOTS with the help of Nick, and I’m sure there’s more going on that I am unaware of. Please contact me with updates and I’ll see how easy it is to continue to update! Hell, my daughter does this all the time on her site… And let’s all welcome Doe to our Manson Family who will do so much more than just answer phones on the dialogue side of the street! More later, just keep checking back! Ron on January 26, 2005 posted by C5 Sound at 11:37 AM 2 comments
